What’s Really Standing Between You and a Leak-Free Home?

Your roof won’t fix itself, let’s make sure it’s ready
  • Why does my roof have missing or lifted shingles?

Missing or lifted shingles are almost always a sign of wind damage, and here in Houston, it’s something we see after just about every strong storm season. When wind gets up and under the edge of a shingle, it breaks the seal that's supposed to hold it flat against your roof. Once that seal is broken, the shingle can lift, crack, or blow off completely, and the shingles around it become more vulnerable too.

The tricky part is that missing or lifted shingles aren't just a cosmetic issue. They expose the underlayment and decking to sun, rain, and humidity, which means a leak can develop faster than most homeowners expect. If you've noticed a shingle in the yard after a windy day, or you can see a section of your roof that looks uneven or lifted from the ground, we'd recommend getting it looked at before your next big rain. We offer free estimates across the Houston Metro Area, and we're happy to check the whole roof while we're up there, not just the spot you're worried about.

  • What should I do about granular loss on shingles, or granules in my gutters?

Finding granules in your gutters or downspouts is one of the most overlooked warning signs of a roof getting close to the end of its life. Those granules are the small, sandy-looking particles on the surface of your asphalt shingles, and they do more than just give your roof its color. They protect the asphalt layer underneath from UV rays and heat, which is important in our climate, where the sun beats down for months at a time.

Some granule loss is normal, especially right after installation or after a hailstorm. But if you're noticing bald or shiny patches on your shingles, or you're seeing a steady buildup of granules in your gutters year after year, it’s a sign the shingles are aging and losing their protective layer. Once too many granules are gone, the asphalt underneath starts to dry out and crack faster, which shortens the life of your roof. We'd suggest scheduling an inspection so we can tell you whether you're dealing with normal wear or a roof that's due for repair or replacement.

  • What are signs that my roof needs repair or replacement?

There are a handful of signs we tell Houston homeowners to watch for, and most of them are things you can spot from the ground:

    • Missing, cracked, curling, or lifted shingles
    • Granule loss or granules collecting in your gutters
    • Active leaks or ceiling stains, or spots that show previous repair patches
    • Sagging areas on the roofline
    • Daylight visible through the attic boards
    • Shingles that are 15 years old or older

Any one of these on its own doesn't necessarily mean you need a full replacement. Sometimes, a targeted repair to a section of flashing or a handful of shingles solves the problem. However, when we see several of these signs together, or a roof that's already had a few rounds of repairs, replacement usually ends up being the smarter long-term investment. We walk every customer through that decision honestly, based on the roof's age, its condition, and what makes sense for your budget.

  • What do stains or spots on my ceiling mean?

Stains or spots on your ceiling are one of the clearest signs that water is getting into your home somewhere it shouldn't be. In most cases, that water is coming from the roof, whether it's from missing shingles, damaged flashing around a chimney or vent, or a failed seal somewhere on the roofline. By the time a stain appears on your ceiling, water has usually already seeped through the roof decking and insulation, which means it has likely been leaking for a while.

We know it's tempting to wait and see if a small yellow-brown spot gets any bigger before calling a roofer, but leaks rarely stay small in our climate. Between heavy rain events and high humidity, moisture that gets into your attic or walls can lead to rotted decking, damaged drywall, and even mold growth. If you're seeing any staining on your ceiling, we'd treat that as a sign to get a roof inspection sooner rather than later, since finding the source early usually means a smaller, less expensive fix.

  • Can hail or a windstorm affect my roof?
Yes, and if you live anywhere in the Houston Metro Area, it's really a matter of when, not if. Our region sees a mix of severe thunderstorms, high straight-line winds, hailstorms, and tropical systems throughout the year, and all of them can affect your roof in different ways. Wind can lift or tear off shingles and loosen flashing, while hail can bruise or crack shingles and knock granules loose, even when the damage isn't obvious from the ground.

After a storm, a lot of homeowners walk outside, look up, and don't see anything obviously wrong, so they assume the roof is fine. Hail damage can be subtle at first and turn into a leak months later once the compromised shingles start to fail. If you've had a recent hail or wind event in your area, we always recommend a professional inspection, especially if you're planning to file an insurance claim, since documenting damage soon after a storm makes the claims process much smoother.

  • How long should my roof last?

Most asphalt shingle roofs in the Houston area last somewhere in the 15-to-25-year range, depending on the quality of the shingles, how well the roof was ventilated and installed, and how much storm activity it's weathered along the way. We tend to use 15 years as a general benchmark for when a roof starts entering its risk zone, especially with our combination of intense summer heat, humidity, and regular severe weather.

That said, lifespan isn't just about the calendar. A 12-year-old roof that's been through several hailstorms might need attention sooner than a 20-year-old roof that's been well maintained and had minor repairs along the way. That's why we look at the whole picture during an inspection, including shingle condition, attic ventilation, and any past repair history, rather than just going off age alone.
